September 13, 2005 Just call me AW. So I've finally started getting Tadpoles out to the masses. It'll be at Big Bear Lake International Film Fest September 19-23, Los Angeles Latino International Film Fest October 21-30, and The Hampton's International Film Fest October 19-23 (where apparently it's won an award). Heh. I'm now The Award Winning Miguel Alvarez. Nice. Oh yeah, by the way, the trailer's fixed for Tadpoles. - mig
July 28, 2005 From the horse's mouth. just wanted to drop a quick line to let you know that an official cut of Heroin is done. as of last week, the film left joanne's hands in l.a. and proceeded to texas. it is now with my brother, tony, and elliott jackson in austin where it is going through a thorough sound edit. this will take,
i predict, about another month and then i hope to have a final version ready for the festival circuit. -raffi
July 27, 2005 You're never finished. So I thought I was finally done with Tadpoles when I finished uploading the trailer. Then I realized I'd spend the next six months bouncing $30 checks and hammering out twenty-five word synopses for the film festival circuit. I need a groupie, er...assistant, to handle these matters. - mig
May 30, 2005 Rollin', rollin', rollin'. Last December I found myself in Brownsville, Matamoros, McAllen, and Reynosa for eight days shooting a film with Cruz Angeles and Maria Topete (those two cats responsible for Rollin Deep Productions). Between falling asleep during takes and ignoring Homeland Security, we managed to come out with The Soulless (a name that reads much better in Spanish - desalmadas). Check out a preview here. - mig
May 4, 2005 Shout Out. Much, much thanks to Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellán for their support through the University of Texas' RTF program. - mig
May 3, 2005 News, news, news. Here's your chance to see what I've been up to the last couple of months. Tadpoles officially screens May 14th at 3:30pm at the CMA Building auditorium on the University of Texas campus. Now it unofficially screens May 11th at 7pm (shh, don't tell anyone). Also, for those of ya who can't get enough PBS in your life, my documentary Veteran's Day makes an unofficial appearance on Paul Stekler's Special Session TV show the first week of June throughout Texas. So that's Austin, June 2nd, 7:30pm, KLRU and San Antonio, June 5th, 1pm, KLRN. Other cities, ya gotta check your local listings (heh, I always wanted to say that). - mig
April 15, 2005 Digital Mastubation. Sam Da Aussie's summation of my latest Tadpoles rough cut. So much for that nine minute epic treatise on humanity and war I was trying to make. - mig
April 3, 2005 Out of the Cave. Heh. 7 months. So much for regular updates. Lately been trying to wrap my head around the sound design for my latest short, Tadpoles. Conceived as a short, non-synch film where visuals and sound would carry the story (as opposed to being dialogue-driven) after a night of talking shit with Cruz Angeles last summer. Less than a year later, the film's in the can, and I'm in the middle of a rough cut.
And I'm still trying to figure out the sound. Fucking Cruz. - mig
